EASTON, Pa. – The Colgate softball team found some more late-game magic in an 8-5 extra-inning victory at Lafayette in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader. The Leopards went on to win the nightcap 3-0 to even the best-of-three series at 1-1.
Colgate trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning of the 8-5, eight-inning victory, but the Raiders put up four runs in the frame to surge ahead 5-2. Lafayette used a two-out, three-run home run to knot the score at 5-5 and send it to extras. The Raiders rallied with three more runs in the eighth and held on to claim the 8-5 victory.
A two-run home run gave the Leopards an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first of the day's opener. The Raiders answered right back in the top of the second as sophomore
Jordan Miller smacked a ball off the top of the center field wall for a leadoff double. Sophomore
Sabrina Odierno followed with a two-out RBI single to right to pull Colgate within 2-1.
After the first-inning home run, sophomore starting pitcher
Jessica Hay allowed just four hits through the next five frames to keep the Leopard lead at one. Colgate put constant pressure on the Leopards, but finally broke through in the seventh.
First-year
Christiana Cottrell opened the top of the seventh by taking first on a Lafayette error before sophomore
Virginia Irby drew a walk. The Leopards couldn't handle a hard-hit ball off the bat of first-year
Mia Guevarra that allowed Cottrell to run home and knot the score at 2-2. An RBI bloop single from Miller then plated the go-ahead run before a two-run base hit off the bat of junior
Baillie Jorth capped off Colgate's four-run inning and put the Raiders in front 5-2.
Hay had the Leopards down to their last out, but Lafayette's Maddie Wensel stepped up with a game-tying three-run home run to center field to knot the score at 5-5 and send the game to extra innings.
Colgate responded right away in the top of the eighth as Cottrell reached first by way of error once again. Following a sac bunt from Irby, Guevarra smoked a double down the left field line to score Cottrell and put the Raiders in front. A sacrifice fly from senior
Holly Geranen and solo home run from Miller capped the three-run frame as the Raiders surged ahead 8-5.
The Leopards threatened with two runners on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, but senior
Kyle Griswold got a pop up and strikeout to end the game and secure the 8-5 Colgate win.
The nightcap started much like the opener as Lafayette was ahead 2-0 after one thanks to a pair of unearned runs. Colgate was only able to muster one hit in the opening five frames as Lafayette's Alexis Randall was in control.
The Leopards added a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-0. First-year
Bella Crow continued to shine as she surrendered just four hits for the entire game, but Colgate wasn't able to get to Randall as the Leopards held on to win 3-0 and even the series at 1-1.
