EASTON, Pa. – A five-run third inning gave Lafayette the separation it would need to secure a 6-5 win in the series finale of a three-game Patriot League series Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders held an early 1-0 lead before Lafayette put up a five spot in the third. Colgate rallied with three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one. After a Lafayette solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, the Raiders put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh that fell just short as the Leopards held on to win 6-5 and take the series 2-1.
Colgate got on the board right away as sophomore
Virginia Irby led off the game with a single through the left side. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of junior
Meghan Romero, Irby then scored on an RBI single up the middle from senior
Holly Geranen that gave the Raiders an early 1-0 lead.
Colgate starting pitcher
Bella Crow allowed just one hit in the first two innings until the Leopards broke through in the second trip through the lineup. Lafayette used three hits, two Colgate errors, a walk and a hit by pitch to plate five runs in the third inning and take a 5-1 lead.
Timely two-out hits helped the Raiders make it a one-run game in the top of the fifth. An RBI single up the middle from Romero scored first-year
Christiana Cottrell before Geranen came through with a clutch base hit to center to score Irby and Romero and trim the Leopard lead down to 5-4.
Sophomore pitcher Jess Hay limited the Leopards to just one hit in her first 3.2 innings of relief work until Lafayette's Paige Grover sent a two-out, solo home run over the left field fence to make it 6-4 Leopards in the bottom of the sixth.
Irby smacked a two-out double in the seventh and Romero followed with a single through the right side to pull the Raiders within one at 6-5. Lafayette pitcher Alexis Randall got the final out, however, to secure her second-straight complete-game victory.
