Raiders Capture 6-4 Extra-Inning Win Over Brown

Colgate Splits Saturday Action at Hatter Invite

DELAND, Fla. – The Colgate softball team battled back for a 6-4 extra-inning victory over Brown to pick up the Raiders first win of the season Saturday afternoon at the Hatter Invitational. The win helped Colgate bounce back from a tough 3-1 loss to Mount St. Mary's in the day's opener.

Senior Holly Geranen hit two home runs on the day, accounting for three RBI. Sophomore Nicole Rounsavill recorded the game-tying RBI in the win over the Bears, as well as what proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore Brittany Bendel earned the victory in the circle after throwing 4.2 innings of one-run relief.

The nightcap was scoreless through the first two innings until Geranen smacked her second homer of the day, this one a two-run shot to left to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Brown answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to knot the score at 2-2 through three.

Brown pulled ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but Colgate answered in the sixth to tie the score at 3-3 as Rounsavill drove in first-year Christiana Cottrell. Bendel hurled a scoreless seventh before the game was sent to extra innings.

Sophomore Baillie Jorth smacked an RBI double to right center before Rounsavill followed with a one-run hit of her own. Sophomore Jordan Miller added an RBI bunt to give the Raiders a 6-3 edge. Brown got one back in in the bottom of the eighth, but Bendel closed it out to secure the first win of the season with the 6-4 victory.

Geranen smacked a two-out solo home run over the center field fence to give Colgate a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Mount St. Mary's. Sophomore Jessica Hay kept the Mount hitless until the bottom of the fourth when a hit by pitch and walk were followed by an RBI single that knotted the score at 1-1 through four.

The score remained tied until a two-run single gave the Mount a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Colgate put a runner on base in the top of the seventh, but wasn't able to come back as the Raiders fell 3-1.
