DELAND, Fla. – Colgate got its bats going with 13 hits on the day, but couldn't get the run production it needed as the Raiders dropped a 6-1 contest to Brown and 2-1 game to Stetson on the opening day of the Hatter Invitational.
Sophomore
Jessica Hay shined in the circle, throwing 4.2 innings of scoreless relief in the two games combined. Senior
Holly Geranen led the Raider bats with a 4-for-6 showing at the plate in the Friday contests.
Brown scored three second-inning runs, two of which were unearned, to open the scoring in the day's first game. The Raiders got a run back in the bottom of the second as sophomore
Virginia Irby roped a leadoff ground rule double before classmate
Nicole Rounsavill drove her in on an RBI groundout to put the score at 3-1 through two frames.
The Bears immediately took back their three-run lead in the top of the third with another unearned tally to make it 4-1. After a scoreless fourth, Brown put up two more runs in the fifth and Colgate was never able to recover as the Bears captured the 6-1 victory.
Senior
Kyle Griswold kept the host Hatters off the board for the first two innings of the nightcap, but Stetson struck with single runs in the third and fourth frames to put Colgate in a 2-0 hole after four.
Junior
Baillie Jorth led off the sixth with a single before advancing to second on a throwing error. Sophomore
Jordan Miller then drove in pinch runner
Madison Aston to pull the Raiders within one at 2-1. The Raiders threatened in the remainder of the sixth and the seventh, but couldn't find the game-tying run as Stetson held on for the 2-1 win.
