GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Colgate softball team wasn't able to get its bats warmed up in a pair of tough 7-0 losses at Furman in the Raiders' season-opening doubleheader Friday.
The Paladins took 4-0 lead through the first four innings of the day's opener thanks to a pair of runs in the second and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. First-year
Olivia LaQua drew a one-out walk in the sixth before junior
Meghan Romero broke up Furman's no-hit bid with a single to center. The Colgate bats weren't able to muster anything else, however, as the Paladins went on to score three in the bottom of the sixth to cement their 7-0 victory.
Furman picked up where it left off in the nightcap, putting the Raiders in a 3-0 hole after the first frame. First-year
Mia Guevarra, junior
Baillie Jorth and first-year
Christiana Cottrell scattered hits through the first three innings, but the Paladins added on four more runs in the next two frames to stretch their lead to 7-0 through four. The Raiders weren't able to recover as Furman held on for the 7-0 win to sweep the Friday doubleheader.
