Raiders Drop Saturday Doubleheader at USC Upstate

Geranen, Rounsavill Finish Day With Two RBI Apiece

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Colgate softball team nearly handed USC Upstate its first loss of the season in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader, but the Spartans were able to secure 8-7 and 7-0 victories over the Raiders to move to 6-0 on the season.

After a scoreless first inning in the day's opener, USC Upstate put up a four spot in the second to take an early lead. The Spartans added two more in the third to stretch their lead to 6-0. First-year Mia Guevarra knocked two hits and classmate Christiana Cottrell added one, but Colgate couldn't get the bats going and USC Upstate went on to win 7-0.

Sophomore Virginia Irby knocked a one-out single to open up the top of the first inning of the nightcap before Geranen smacked a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Raiders a quick 2-0 lead.

The Spartans returned the favor in the bottom half of the frame with a two-out, two-run home run that tied the score at 2-2. Colgate answered right back in the top of the second with an RBI single from sophomore Jordan Miller and an RBI sacrifice fly from first-year Olivia LaQua to put the Raiders back up by two at 4-2.

A two-out RBI double from sophomore Nicole Rounsavill stretched Colgate's to 5-2 in the third as the Raiders kept the offense going. The Spartans loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame, but first-year pitcher Bella Crow worked out of the jam to get three quick outs and keep Colgate ahead 5-2 through three.

The Spartans tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Colgate responded right away in the fifth as RBIs from junior Meghan Romero and Rounsavill put Colgate in front 7-5. The Spartans plated three in the bottom of the sixth, however, and the Raiders couldn't rally in the seventh as USC Upstate walked away with the 8-7 win.
