ITHACA, N.Y. – Balanced scoring and a strong second half propelled Colgate to a 73-57 victory over Cornell here Sunday afternoon.
Will Rayman scored 16 points to lead four Raiders in double-figures.
Jordan Burns and
Dana Batt scored 14 apiece, while Malcom Regisford added 12.
Rapolas Ivanauskas just missed his third straight double-double, finishing with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Cornell entered the game 2-0 for the first time in nine years and broke in front early. The Big Red led 5-1 and 10-3 before the Raiders reeled off 10 straight points for a 13-10 advantage on Ivanauskas' 3-pointer with 12:18 showing.
That was part of an 18-2 Colgate run that put the Raiders in front 21-12 on Burns' 3-pointer at the 8:49 mark. Colgate held on for a 31-28 halftime lead.
But Colgate for the second game in a row played its best after intermission.
After Cornell grabbed a 35-34 advantage on Josh Warren's jumper with 16:48 left, Colgate scored six straight to take the lead for keeps.
The Raiders followed with scoring runs of 8-0 and 9-2 to stretch the lead to 59-43 with 6:58 showing. Ball movement was the key as Colgate in the second half scored 11 baskets on seven assists, and dominated in the paint to the tune of 32-14.
Cornell never drew closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
The Raiders dealt their Central New York rivals their first loss of the season after a 2-0 start. Colgate, meanwhile, won its second straight.
