HAMILTON – No. 18 Cornell used a pair of second-half goals to defeat Colgate 2-0 on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Â
After a scoreless first half, Cornell struck first in the 67th minute. Caleb Mcauslan delivered a long cross to the left wing, where Emeka Eneli redirected a header over the outstretched arms of
Jacob Harris and into the top right corner of the net to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead.
Colgate picked up its pressure offensively in search for the equalizer but it was the Big Red to issue the final blow in the 74th minute. John Scearce finished a pass on the right side from Mcauslan with a low shot past Harris to give the visitors an insurance goal down the stretch.
Kentaro Morrison had one of the better second-half chances for Colgate. Morrison took possession near midfield and had a step on a Cornell defender but his near-side shot from the left side of the six-yard box was turned aside by Ryan Shellow.Â
Despite outshooting Cornell 11-4 in the second stanza, the Raiders could not find the back of the net. Cornell played solid defensively to hold off the Raider attack, blocking four shots in all.Â
The Raiders continued to generate offensive chances late, but
Oliver Harris struck a set piece just high from 20 yards out and
Aram Ouligian forced a header wide of the right post with time winding down as Cornell went on to secure the 2-0 victory.
