HAMILTON – The No. 20 Colgate men's soccer team cranked a season-high 18 shots but could not find the back of the net in a 0-0 double overtime draw against American on Saturday in a Patriot League showdown at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Just over nine minutes in, Colgate had its first scoring chance.
Tim Oberg stuffed a long pass through the American back line and found
Kentaro Morrison, who was all alone on a breakaway. Eagles keeper Lucas Manso sprinted out of the goal to eliminate Morrison's angle and pick up his first save.
Morrison forced another save by Manso midway through the first half after he received another great pass near the top of the box. Morrison created space on the right side and lifted a shot near side but Manso turned it away for his second and final save of the half.
The Raiders went into the locker room holding a 5-1 edge in shots, including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal, but the score remained 0-0.
Colgate once again came out strong in the second half as Oberg nearly had his first career goal in the 49th minute. Manso was out of position after a quick centering pass found Oberg near the top of the box. The senior captain went for the open side of the net but an Eagles defender got in the way of the shot and deflected it away.
Ryan Krueger had a great chance on an abbreviated breakaway with a quick shot from the right side. Manso once again raced out to force a tough-angled shot and the Eagles were able to clear the ball out of their defensive zone.
Christian Clarke had one of the best scoring chances for Colgate in the 74th minute.
Will Stroud curved a corner kick into the box and Clarke connected with a header but the shot was just high.
Edward Bass and
Aram Ouligian each notched a shot in the 89th minute but the American defense prevailed to send the match to overtime.
Jacob Harris made a nice play on an American corner kick in the 95th minute, coming out of the net to intercept a long cross out of mid-air. Morrison and
Ryan Bellavance had a pair of late shots blocked as the two teams settled for a scoreless stalemate.
