Field Hockey Concludes Season with 2-1 Overtime Win

Potter’s First Career Game-Winner Lifts Raiders to 2-1 Victory over Rider

HAMILTON – The Colgate field hockey program completed the 2018 campaign in a similar fashion as to how it was started, as the Raiders earned a 2-1 overtime victory against Rider on Sunday afternoon.

After opening the season with a 1-0 overtime win against Central Michigan, the Raiders earned their second overtime victory of the year in the season finale behind goals by Meghan Minturn and Nikki Potter. The game against the Broncs marks the final game of the 2018 season for the Colgate field hockey program, as they recorded a 4-14 overall record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Raiders first half featured fast and aggressive offensive play, which translated onto the scoreboard when Colgate saw its first penalty corner opportunity of the game. After swerving the ball across the field, sophomore Meghan Minturn's persistence paid off when she was able to pick up the rebound on her own blocked shot just inside of the arc. With a sweeping shot, the Winnetka, Illinois native lifted the Raiders to a 1-0 lead through the first half of play.

The Broncs pressured back in the second half, and was able to level the score when they capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity by some back-and-forth passes and a tipped shot low into the cage. The result forced the game to overtime, before the Raiders were granted their seventh penalty corner of the game.

As junior Maggie Lake inserted the ball in the extra session, a controlled stop by sophomore Taylor Casamassa allowed for a shot that Potter was able to redirect into the back of the goal. The golden goal lifted Colgate to a 2-1 win over Rider in the season finale.
