HAMILTON – The Colgate men's basketball team pulled away for an 83-69 win over American to complete the Raiders' first-ever season sweep of the Eagles Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court.
The Eagles were within three points with seven minutes to play, but Colgate closed the game on a 20-9 run to claim the Raiders' fourth-straight win and improve to 7-3 in the Patriot League.
First-year
Jordan Burns led Colgate with a career-high 27 points, while sophomore
Will Rayman tallied a season-best 25. Senior
Sean O'Brien added 14 to round out the Raiders in double-digits.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but five points from Burns and a Rayman jumper quickly put the Raiders in front 7-5 just over two minutes into the game. The lead changed hands three times in the next eight minutes before back-to-back three-pointers from O'Brien and senior
Jordan Swopshire put Colgate ahead 25-20 at the 7:57 mark.
American was within one at 25-24 a minute later, but another O'Brien trey sparked an 18-5 half-closing run. Rayman contributed 11 points to the streak that gave the Raiders a dominant 43-29 lead heading into the locker room.
The Eagles opened the second half on a 14-7 run to trim Colgate's lead down to single digits at 50-43 with 14:39 on the clock. American was eventually within three following a 7-0 streak that pulled the Eagles within 55-52 at the 12:23 mark.
Colgate wasn't able to get much separation until an O'Brien layup was followed by six-straight points from Burns as the Raiders' 8-0 run gave them a 71-60 advantage with 5:12 to play.
The Eagles wouldn't get closer than nine the rest of the way as Colgate added eight points from the free throw line and two field goals in the final five minutes to cement the 83-69 win.
