Colgate Picks Up Big 1-0 Win at Syracuse

Raiders Earn First Road Win at Syracuse in 11 Years

HAMILTON – The Colgate women's soccer team captured its first road win at Syracuse since 2006 Thursday night when the Raiders blanked the Orange, 1-0. Sophomore Mara Cosentino scored in the 20th minute to provide the offense, while classmate Kelly Chiavaro made six saves in goal to secure her first shutout of the season.

The Raiders handed the Orange just their second loss of the season, with Syracuse's only other defeat coming at the hands of No. 8 Florida. It marks Colgate's first win over the Orange since a 1-0 decision in Hamilton in 2014, and the first road win against Syracuse in 11 years.

Chiavaro made a pair of big saves in the opening 15 minutes of the game before Cosentino got the Raiders on the board in the 20th minute. Senior Emily Crichlow passed the ball across the box to Cosentino, who made a one-move cut around an Orange defender and sent the ball into the far post to give Colgate a 1-0 lead.

Cosentino's goal was the first goal that Syracuse had surrendered in over 213 minutes of play. The last goal the Orange had given up was against No. 8 Florida on Aug. 27.

Cosentino nearly scored again in the 42nd minute, but Syracuse keeper Courtney Brosnan made the save to keep the Orange deficit at 1-0 heading into halftime.

Chiavaro made two stops in the first three minutes of the second half before the Raiders regained possession and peppered the Orange with three shots in a 10-minute time frame.

Colgate withstood a barrage of Orange corner kicks in the final minutes as the Raider defense and Chiavaro hung on to secure the 1-0 victory.
