Early Deficit Troubles Colgate at Mississippi State

Sophomore Abby Sotomayor Nets Two Goals for Raiders

STARKVILLE, Miss.  – The Colgate women's soccer team found itself down 4-0 30 minutes into the Raiders' Sunday contest at Mississippi State and were never able to recover. Sophomore Abby Sotomayor tallied a pair of goals, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs claimed a 6-2 victory.

The Bulldogs scored just 40 seconds into the contest to put Colgate in a quick 1-0 hole. A tough break led to a Colgate own goal less than three minutes later to give Mississippi State a 2-0 lead in the fourth minute.

A header from A.K. Ward gave MSU its third goal at the 17:24 mark. Senior Eliza Doll forced Bulldog keeper Catalina Perez to make her first save of the game four minutes later. MSU took a 4-0 lead in 29th minute, but Sotomayor was able to get Colgate on the board three minutes later.

Sotomayor fired in a shot from the top of the box and buried it in the back of the net at the 31:22 mark. Less than 40 seconds later, Sotomayor pulled Colgate within 4-2 after converting a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.  The Bulldogs added another goal in the 41st minute to carry a 5-2 lead into halftime.

After the high-scoring first half, both defenses settled in to control the second half. The Raiders had a few quality chances, but weren't able to cut any further into the Bulldog lead. MSU added a goal in the final five minutes to walk away with the 6-2 win.

  • "There were some bright moments on which to build upon. That's exactly what we'll look to do as we prepare for Syracuse and Albany."

  • Kickoff against the Orange is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be available on ACC Network Extra.
