HAMILTON – A 65th-minute goal from senior
Troy Moo Penn coupled with a strong defensive effort helped the Colgate men's soccer team to its second-straight shutout victory with a 1-0 win over Princeton Sunday afternoon at a rainy Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Senior keeper
Peter Tappenden made three saves in goal to secure the clean sheet. Colgate earned a 2-0 win over Northwestern Friday in the opener of the Central New York Classic, and with today's victory the Raiders claim the tournament championship.
Junior
Uyi Omorogbe forced Princeton keeper Jacob Schachner to make the game's first save in the 13th minute. The teams traded shots in the first half, with the best opportunity coming on a
Freddy Jonsson header in the 26th minute, but neither team could find the back of the net as the game went into halftime scoreless.
The Raiders had a few key chances early on in the second half with five corner kicks and four shots in the opening 15 minutes of the term. Senior
Karl Brown had the best opportunity yet in the 58th minute when his header off a corner kick was punched just over the bar by Schachner.
The Raiders were able to break the scoreless draw in the 65th minute on Moo Penn's first goal of the season. Senior
Jared Stroud found a streaking Moo Penn who finished the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the net to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Tappenden made a pair of huge saves in the 70th minute, the first of which was on a breakaway chance from Princeton, to keep Colgate in front.
The teams entered into a 30-minute lightning delay with 11:27 to play. Once play resumed, the Raiders were able to hold off the Tigers to secure the 1-0 victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach
Erik Ronning
- "It's so hard to win games at the college level, particularly when you're playing teams like Princeton and Northwestern. Every game we play is against top-quality opponents. I'm thrilled that we were able to come out on top."
- "I'm very pleased with the way we played overall. I thought we started very slow, but we ended the first half very well. For the first 30 minutes of the second half we were very sharp on both ends of the ball against a very good team. Princeton put us under pressure in the last 15 minutes, but that's what good teams are going to do to you."
- "We keep on getting better and I'm very pleased with the progress that we're making. We're going to recover and come back to get ready for Oregon State, which is a strong Pac 12 team. We'll be ready and we'll keep on getting better throughout the process."
