HAMILTON – Colgate men's soccer senior keeper
Peter Tappenden made a career high-tying six saves in goal, but it wasn't enough as No. 11 Syracuse dealt Colgate a 2-0 loss Monday night at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Syracuse struck in the ninth minute as a Colgate foul set up an Orange free kick five-yards off the left-hand corner of the 18-yard box. Syracuse's Hugo Delhommelle took the kick and struck it right into the far post over the head of a diving Tappeneden to put the Orange up 1-0.
Tappenden made a pair of great diving saves in the 30th and 36th minutes, but the Orange were able to add an insurance goal in the 37th minute. Johannes Pieles headed in a corner kick from Delhommelle to increase the Syracuse advantage to 2-0 heading into halftime.
A free kick from senior
Jared Stroud just outside the box provided a good Colgate opportunity the 69th minute, but the strike sailed high over the post. A shot from junior
Steven DeLeo in the final few minutes provided another good chance, but Syracuse keeper Hendrick Hilpert made the diving stop to secure Syracuse's 2-0 victory.

Head Coach
Erik Ronning
- "I thought that we were very well prepared coming into the game. Syracuse is a high-quality team. The difference in the game was the set pieces. We didn't give away a whole lot the entire game with the exception of set pieces, so we have to do a much better job with that. The task for me and my staff is to better prepare our guys to compete at a high level in set piece situations."
- "I have belief and trust in our players that we can compete with a team at this level such as Syracuse. I think we sold ourselves short tonight. I know we have a very good team. We had some really quality moments. As always, we have to learn from what's happened and we have to move on. My hope is that we'll be more prepared against Army this Friday night."
