Colgate Claims Fourth-Straight Win With 1-0 Victory Over Army

Sotomayor’s 13th-minute Penalty Kick Stands as Game-Winner

HAMILTON – A 13th-minute penalty kick from sophomore Abby Sotomayor proved to be all the offense the Colgate women's soccer team would need as the defense and sophomore keeper Kelly Chiavaro stepped up to secure a 1-0 shutout of visiting Army Saturday night at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

The win marked Colgate's fourth-straight victory and the Raiders have won five of their last six games.

The teams traded possession in the opening minutes before a foul in the Army box led to a Colgate penalty kick. Sotomayor stepped up to the line and converted the PK to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

The Raiders out-shot the Black Knights 4-0 for the rest of the half, including a shot from senior Emily Crichlow that nearly added an insurance goal, but ricocheted off the post in the 39th minute. Army had two corner kick chances in the final five minutes, but Colgate carried its 1-0 lead into halftime.

Colgate forced Army keeper Sydney Cassalia to make a pair of big saves in the opening ten minutes of the second half to keep the Raider lead at 1-0. The Colgate defense kept the Black Knights at bay for a majority of the second half until a key save in the final minutes from Chiavaro secured the 1-0 Raider win.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Kathy Brawn
  • "It's great to get the 2-0 start in league play. Army came out with a fantastic game plan and we had to earn every little bit that we got. We got a little flustered in the second half, but we bent and didn't break. It was nice to see the team find a way to win a game like this that wasn't at all easy."
  • "We head to Lehigh Wednesday and we know that we'll be facing a tough team. We'll have to be mindful of recovery and getting our work in to get well prepared for Wednesday."

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Chiavaro
  • "This win was huge for the team because it was a really good team effort. Army attacked well in the second half and we really worked well as a team to shut them down. We have a big week coming up with two games, so it's nice to go into that with a four-game winning streak knowing that we can all work really well together."
