Raider Rally Falls Short at Bucknell

Lowe Leads With 19 Kills, Sanderson Narrowly Misses Triple-Double

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell used a 9-2 rally to close out the fourth set and deal Colgate a 3-1 setback Saturday in Patriot League play.
 
The Raiders had won Set 3 and appeared poised to send this match to a fifth and deciding stanza. Colgate after a timeout used a 6-0 run to take a 21-16 lead over the host Bison.
 
But Bucknell responded with its closing flurry and dealt Colgate a second straight loss to open the Patriot League schedule.
 
The Raiders held an early 8-5 lead in the opening set, but Bucknell rattled off a 9-2 streak to pull ahead 14-10. The Bison worked their lead to five at 19-14, but back-to-back kills from first-year Alli Lowe capped off a 6-2 Colgate streak to pull the Raiders within one at 21-20. The Bison were back ahead by two at 23-21 before spikes from Lowe and junior Amanda Smith knotted the score at 23 and forced a Bison timeout. Bucknell scored the next two points out of the break, however, to take a 1-0 match lead with the 25-23 set-one victory.
 
The second set began in a 9-9 tie, but Bucknell quickly took a commanding 21-11 lead. A pair of service aces from junior Katie Stansbury and three Lowe kills helped comprise an 11-2 Raider run as Colgate clawed all the way back within one at 23-22. Bucknell scored two of the set's final three points, however, to take a 2-0 match lead with the 25-23 set-two victory.  
 
A pair of kills from both Lowe and sophomore Taylor Flaherty guided the Raiders to an early 9-4 lead in the third set. Colgate kept cruising and stretched its advantage to 15-9 and Bucknell wouldn't get closer than five the rest of the way. A Bison attack error ended the set and secured the 25-20 set-three win for the Raiders.
 
The fourth set began in a 6-6 draw before the Raiders rattled off four-straight points to pull ahead 10-6. The team traded points before Bucknell scored three in a row to forge a 14-14 tie. Trailing 16-15, Colgate called timeout and responded with its 6-0 run. Stansbury with a pair of kills and Hutchison another to spark the rally. But Bucknell evened its record for the weekend with its closing 9-2 flurry.
