HAMILTON – Emily Crichlow tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Colgate women's soccer team with three points as the Raiders picked up the 3-1 win to open up Patriot League play over the Loyola Greyhounds at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
With her goal and an assist, Crichlow recorded her second most points in a game while junior
Shannon Pawlak recorded her second career goal in the game.
The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead just over 6:30 into the game on a beautiful goal from
Mara Cosentino. The play started in the defensive side when
Dom DeMarco played the ball to
Abby Sotomayor at midfield. Sotomayor took a few dribbles before playing a long ball into the right side of the box. Crichlow chased the ball down and dribbled twice before crossing from the end line to Cosentino who one-touched the ball over Loyola goalkeeper Sumer Rahe's outstretched hands.
Crichlow picked up a goal of her own midway through the first half after another great set up. After a corner kick,
Martina Loncar controlled the ball near the top right corner of the box before crossing the ball to Crichlow behind the defender on the back door where she volleyed the ball into the net.
With just 2:43 left before halftime, Pawlak picked up her first goal of the season to make it 3-0 with a rocket from deep.
Lindsey Wiley touched the ball to Pawlak before she ripped a 35-yard shot just below the crossbar to extend the Raiders lead.
The Greyhounds managed to get one goal back early in the second half on a solid strike from Claire Beath that just got passed the dive from Colgate goalkeeper
Kelly Chiavaro.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach
Kathy Brawn
- "There is so much parity in the league and its so important to get that first win, and the fact that it came in the first Patriot League game is huge for us. Loyola was a team that we knew, even down 3-0, we knew would keep battling and sure enough they came back and found that goal to make it 3-1.
- "We keep getting great performances all the way through from the starting 11 to the people who come in and everyone on the sidelines, so that's really a positive thing."
- "The three goals we scored today were the culmination of some things that we've been emphasizing over the last two weeks of practice. It's good to see that come out and it's good to see these players' personalities come out in their creativity and how well they play together."
- "Emily has been having an outstanding senior campaign. On both sides of attacking and defending, she's really playing so completely in every contest and she's doing a great job setting the tone on the field. It's nice to see her rewarded with the goal and the assist, but the work that she does even where there are no stats is something she's willing to do and sets a good example for the younger players."
Senior forward
Emily Crichlow
- "Our team as a whole, everyone had a great game, even those coming off the bench. We kept going at them, at the end of the day, that's why we won and scored so many goals today."
- "It's so important to start off Patriot League play on a good note because we want to go for the Patriot League Championship and beyond. Today is going to mark the beginning of our season."
