Raiders Suffer Setback at Saint Francis (Pa.)

Colgate Out-shoots Red Flash 11-9, but SFU Scores Three Second-Half Tallies

LORETTO, Pa. – A second-half hat trick from Saint Francis' (Pa.) Mario Mastrangelo proved to be too much for the Colgate men's soccer team as the Red Flash claimed a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon. The Raiders saw their three-game win and shutout streak snapped with the loss.
 
The first half proved to be a defensive battle, as both teams were only able to get off three shots apiece. Ben Snider and Steven DeLeo had a pair of good opportunities following a 42nd-minute corner kick, but both were blocked as the game went into halftime scoreless.
 
The Raiders had their best chance of the game just 30 seconds into the second half on a header off a corner kick, but SFU keeper Marcus Rojas made the stop. Ten minutes later, Mastrangelo scored his first goal of the game in the 57th minute to break the scoreless draw.  
 
It marked the first goal Colgate had surrendered in over 325 minutes of play. The Raiders last allowed a goal on Aug. 28 against Binghamton.
 
Colgate out-shot the Red Flash 4-2 over the next 15 minutes, but Mastrangelo added his second and third goals in a two-minute span (81st and 83rd minutes) to cement the 3-0 SFU victory.

  • "Despite the loss, we played some of our best soccer this afternoon. Leading up to the first goal, we felt good about our overall performance as we were defending well and creating chances. We must improve our execution in the final third for sure, which will be a focus moving forward. Once we gave up the goal, we had to chase the game a little which opened things up for Saint Francis."
