HAMILTON –
Senior Emily Crichlow scored her first goal of the season in the 79th minute to lead the Colgate women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten UMass Lowell Thursday night at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

Crichlow headed in a corner kick from senior Eliza Doll to give the Raiders the offense they would need, while the Colgate defense and first-year keeper Sophia Boggs took care of the rest. Boggs made four saves in goal to claim her first career shutout.

The Raiders controlled possession for much of the first half, keeping the ball in Colgate's offensive third for a majority of the term. Colgate had a few strong opportunities and held a 10-1 shot advantage through the first 40 minutes of the stanza, but the Raiders weren't able to find the back of the net.

Boggs and the Colgate defense withstood a River Hawk charge in the final five minutes of the half. The Raiders stood tall through five UMass Lowell shots, including a key save from Boggs on a dangerous free kick chance, to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.

Sophomore Abby Sotomayor forced UMass Lowell keeper Julia Schneider to make two saves in the opening seven minutes of the second half. The Raiders peppered the River Hawks with four shots and corner kick in a three-minute span from the 63rd to the 66th minutes.

After Boggs and Raider defense thwarted a few opportunities from the River Hawks, Crichlow had a breakaway chance in the 74th minute, but Schneider made the diving save.

Crichlow was able to capitalize just five minutes later, however, when she headed a corner kick from Doll into the left-hand netting to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Raider defense didn't let UMass Lowell register a shot the rest of the way as Colgate clinched the 1-0 victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Kathy Brawn
  • "This was huge win both because we needed it and because we played a really good team. UMass Lowell presented some things that we hadn't seen yet. It took us a while to crack the code, but we finally did it. The things that we worked on in the short turnaround that we had to prepare for this game really came out on the field today."
  • "This is an important win going into the three tough road matches we have coming up. To have that experience of a win is really important. We know what we need to do to win these upcoming games and rise to the occasion, and now we've been able to demonstrate the need for tenacity and persistence to get the job done. I thought today was as much of a physical contest as it was a mental contest. We needed that discipline that we were lacking in the other three games and that came out today too."
