Minturn Scores in Opener at UMass Lowell

Raiders Fall to River Hawks, 3-1, in First Game of 2017 Season

LOWELL, Mass. – Colgate field hockey freshman forward Meghan Minturn (Winnetka, Illinois) scored the first goal of her career Friday afternoon at Cushing Field as the Raiders fell at the UMass Lowell River Hawks, 3-1.

Minturn's first career goal came with just 10 seconds remaining in the first half with the Raiders trailing 1-0. Sophomore forward Iona MacKillop (Glasgow, Scotland) sent a pass in towards goal which went right to Minturn's stick where she poked the ball past UMass Lowell goalkeeper Eva Berkhout for the first Raiders' goal of the season.

Earlier in the first half, the River Hawks took a 1-0 lead as Torrie Huk put home the first goal of the game after a defensive save from Meredith Rappaport (Wilton, Connecticut) and the ball came loose in front of the goal.

UMass Lowell claimed a 2-1 lead 2:06 into the second half as Anouk LaLande buried a blocked shot off a penalty corner to go down as the game-winning goal. The River Hawks added an insurance goal off a penalty corner with just 4:35 to go in the second half as Huk buried her second goal of the game.

Colgate goalkeeper Maria Krull (Leicester, Massachusetts) played remarkably in goal for the Raiders, picking up the 2017 season right where she left off the 2016 season. Krull recorded 15 saves in the game, with eight in the first half and seven in the second half.

Krull's helped out in front of the cage as well, knocking down four defensive saves in the game including two from Rappaport in her first career game for the Raiders. Senior Molly Klare (Winnetka, Illinois) and sophomore Emily Lambert (Newtown Square, Pennsylvania) each added defensive saves to help the Raiders defensive stand.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach April Cornell
"I am very happy with how our team performed today, we were a little frantic in the beginning and the team did an awesome job at regaining their composure."

"Our team showed that we can be very dangerous on the attack when we recognize the space move the ball quickly. It was wonderful to see shots from six different players on the team."

"We need to continue to work on our discipline on defense and positioning so we don't give up as many penalty corners and shots on goal. Molly Klare and Maria Krull had great games and did an excellent job anchoring our defense.
