Raiders Fall to LSU in Season Opener

Colgate Unable to Break Through in 3-0 Loss to SEC Foe

HAMILTON – The Colgate women's soccer team dropped a tough 3-0 decision to LSU Sunday night in the Raiders' season opener at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

Colgate outshot the Tigers 25-17, including a 13-6 second-half advantage, but LSU keeper Caroline Brockmeier made 12 big stops to keep the Raiders off the board. The Tigers scored 10 minutes into the game before adding a pair of second half goals.

The Tigers took a quick 1-0 lead in the tenth minute on a goal from Nicole Howard. LSU continued to press in the following minutes, but the Colgate defense stood tall with the help of a diving save from sophomore keeper Kelly Chiavaro.

The Raiders had their first great scoring chance in the 14th minute when a header from sophomore Leah Lewis skirted across the goal and dribbled just wide. Colgate generated several other strong chances throughout the first half, out-shooting the Tigers 12-11 during the term, but weren't able to find the back of the net as LSU carried its 1-0 lead into the locker room.

A free-kick just outside the 18-yard box from senior Eliza Doll five minutes into the second term gave Colgate its first chance of the half, but Brockmeier was there to make the stop. The Tigers turned the tide on their ensuing possession as LSU's Alex Thomas took advantage of a Colgate miscue to put LSU in front 2-0.

LSU's Zoe Higgins added another Tiger tally in the 69th minute as her shot from outside the 18-yard box flew over the head of Chiavaro and into the far corner netting.

The Raiders had a few more chances, but weren't able to recover from the 3-0 deficit as LSU walked away with the win.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Kathy Brawn
  • "I thought there was some fantastic ball movement out there and we created some terrific finishing opportunities early. Their keeper really rose to the occasion a few times and we just missed the mark a couple of other times. We have some good things to build on going forward."
  • "We were a little undisciplined and that bit us a little bit because it was a team that was going to keep coming at us."
  • "Overall, we saw some great things to build on when we look at what we were able to do in game one of this young season with this young team. We'll take it and get ourselves ready to go for next weekend."
