HAMILTON – The Colgate softball team bounced back from a tough 3-2 loss in Saturday's series opener with Holy Cross to grab a dominant 8-1 victory over the Crusaders in the nightcap to secure a split in the twinbill.
Junior
Holly Geranen hit a home run in both games and finished the day 3-for-6 with six RBI. Senior pitcher
Gillian Murray turned out a strong performance in the circle in the 8-1 victory to earn her second-straight Patriot League victory.
Colgate got off to a fast start in the nightcap as Geranen smacked her second home run of the day and third in the last three games in the bottom of the first inning. The three-run shot drove in senior
Katie Bushee and first-year
Virginia Irby to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead through one frame.
Murray limited the Crusaders to just one hit through the first three innings. Colgate was able to tack on two more runs in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from Geranen, her sixth RBI of the day, and an RBI single from first-year
Jordan Miller as the Raiders extended their lead to 5-0.
Holy Cross got a run back in the top of the fourth thanks to a leadoff home run from Taylor Wahler. The Crusaders loaded the bases in the same frame, but Murray got a big strikeout to end the threat and keep Colgate ahead 5-1.
The Raiders put up another crooked number in the fifth as senior
Tara Grennan smoked a double before first-year
Sabrina Odierno drove her home with an RBI single. Sophomore
Baillie Jorth followed with a two-run home run to left center to give Colgate an 8-1 cushion.
Murray took care of the rest, sitting down the final six Holy Cross batters of the game to secure the 8-1 Colgate victory.
The Crusaders used an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of the day's opener. Colgate answered right back in the bottom of the frame as Irby reached on an error before Geranen smacked a two-run home run over the left center fence to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead through one.
After a scoreless second inning, the Crusaders used two hits and two errors to plate two runs in the top of the third and take a 3-2 lead.
First-year
Brittany Bendel and the Colgate defense kept the Crusaders off the board for the rest of the game, but the Raider bats weren't able to get going as Holy Cross pitcher Alexandra Held went the distance to secure the 3-2 victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach
Melissa Finley
- "It is frustrating that we are an inconsistent team, but I was really happy with the adjustment that we made in the batters box for game two. We did a much better job with our approach and manufactured runs when we had the opportunity to. If we can find a way to continue that level of play, then we will see much more consistent results."
- "Gillian did a great job of mixing zones and speeds to hold them to five hits. I thought our defensive game back her up well. It was a solid team win. Holly had another great day at the plate for us, but it was nice to see a lot of other people step up as well."
UP NEXT
- The Raiders and Holy Cross wrap up their three-game series with a 12 p.m. single game Sunday at Eaton Street Field.
