CLEARWATER, Fla. – Colgate used a three-run sixth inning and a pair of shutdown frames from first-year pitcher
Brittany Bendel to earn a 10-9 win over Florida A&M in a back-and-forth battle Friday night. The win helped the Raiders bounce back from an 11-1 loss to North Florida in the day's opener at the USF Series.
Junior
Holly Geranen accounted for four RBI in the victory, including a two-run double in the sixth inning that tied the game. First-year
Jordan Miller drove in the game-winning run with a double of her own a batter later. Bendel earned her second victory of the season after firing the final 4.1 innings, including two scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh stanzas.
The Raiders got out to a quick start in the nightcap by putting up four runs in the top of the first inning, marking the fifth-straight game that Colgate has put up first-inning tallies. First-year
Virginia Irby and sophomore
Lauren La Terra knocked back-to-back, one-out singles before a FAMU error allowed the Raiders to load the bases. A wild pitch and two more Rattler errors allowed three Raiders to run home before an RBI double from first-year
Sabrina Odierno knocked in another and gave Colgate an early 4-0 lead.
FAMU got one run back in the bottom of the frame as a leadoff triple was followed by an RBI groundout to pull the Rattlers within 4-1 through one inning. After a scoreless second inning, FAMU used five hits to push four runs across in the bottom of the third and pull ahead 5-4.
Colgate responded right away in the top of the fourth as the Raiders used four hits and an error to plate three runs and reclaim the lead at 7-5. An RBI base hit from senior
Gillian Murray was followed by a two-run single off the bat of Geranen to put Colgate back on top.
The back-and-forth battle continued as FAMU answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to reclaim the lead at 8-7. With the bases loaded and one out, Geranen made a diving snag at third base and turned it into a double play to limit the damage and keep the Rattler lead at one.
FAMU tacked on a single run in the following frame to extend its advantage to 9-7. The Raiders battled back once again in the top of the sixth as Irby and La Terra reached base before Geranen smacked another two-run hit to right to tie the score at 9-9. Following an FAMU pitching change and strikeout, Miller came through with a double to right to score Geranen in what would prove to be the game-winning run.
The Rattlers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Bendel got two quick outs to keep Colgate ahead. The rookie pitcher then sat FAMU down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 10-9 Colgate victory.
The Ospreys jumped ahead right away in the day's opener as North Florida used three hits and strong base running to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Raiders answered right away as senior
Katie Bushee smoked a leadoff triple to right field to open the bottom of the first. She later scored when Irby intentionally got caught in a rundown to distract the Osprey defense and allow Bushee to run home and cut the UNF lead to 2-1.
North Florida used four hits to plate three runs in the top of the third and extend the Osprey advantage to 5-1. UNF then added on two runs in the fifth and four in sixth. Colgate wasn't able to get much else off North Florida pitcher Morgan Blourne as the Ospreys walked away with the 11-1 victory.
