La Terra’s Walkoff Lifts Colgate Past Stetson

Raiders Beat Stetson 12-11 to Secure Saturday Split

DELAND, Fla. – A walk-off home run from sophomore Lauren La Terra secured a 12-11 victory over Stetson in a back-and-forth, three-plus hour affair Saturday evening at the Stetson Westin Invitational.

La Terra went 5-for-5 with five RBI in the Saturday nightcap to help the Raiders keep a strong Stetson team from capturing its 20th win of the season. The Colgate bats scored more runs off the Hatters than any other team has this season due in part to a season-best five homeruns.

The win helped Colgate bounce back from an 8-3 loss to Manhattan in the tournament opener earlier in the day.

Colgate, the designated home team in the day's nightcap, used the long ball to take an early lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Katie Bushee drew a leadoff walk before La Terra sent a two-run shot over the left center fence to put the Raiders on the board. Junior Holly Geranen followed with a base hit to right before first-year Nicole Rounsavill knocked her first career homerun to dead center field to extend Colgate's lead to 4-0.

The Raiders used a two-out rally to add a run in the bottom of the second as Geranen drove home first-year Virginia Irby with an RBI single to center to extend Colgate's lead to 5-0. Colgate put up another crooked number in the bottom of the third, which began with a solo home run from first-year Jordan Miller. Pinch runner Baillie Jorth later scored on a passed ball before a Stetson error on an Irby bunt allowed first-year Blake Brackett to run home and extend the Raider advantage to 8-0.

Junior pitcher Kyle Griswold kept Stetson off the board until the top of the fifth inning. Stetson used two hits and four Colgate errors to plate five unearned runs and pull within 8-5 through four and a half.

The Raiders answered right back in the bottom of the frame as a two-run single from La Terra drove home Brackett and Bushee to push Colgate's lead to 10-5.

Stetson tied the game in the following frame thanks to five runs off three hits and five walks as the scoreboard read 10-10. It didn't last long, however, as Miller led off the bottom of the sixth with her second solo shot of the day to put Colgate right back on top 11-10 through six.

The Hatters tied it up once again in the top of the seventh when Stetson executed a squeeze play following a pair of walks to put the score at 11-11.

La Terra then played hero when she sent a one-out, no-doubter over the left field fence to secure the 12-11 victory.

The Raiders struck first in the day's opener as Irby sent her first career homerun over the left-center fence to give Colgate a quick 1-0 lead. Geranen followed with a two-out double down the right field line before an RBI base hit off the bat of Rounsavill drove in Geranen and made it 2-0 Raiders.

First-year pitcher Brittany Bendel worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first to preserve the 2-0 Colgate lead. She kept the Jaspers hitless until the bottom of the fourth. Manhattan used six hits and a Colgate error to plate eight runs in the frame and pull ahead 8-2 through four.

The Raiders got one back in the top of the seventh when La Terra drilled a two-out double off the left field wall to drive home Bushee. It was too little, too late, however, as Manhattan held on to win 8-3.
