Raider Rally Not Enough at Binghamton

Colgate Turnovers Halt Comeback Effort in 11-8 Decision; Burke Career-High 18 Saves

VESTAL, N.Y. – Eighteen saves from senior goalkeeper Brandon Burke were not enough for Colgate to stave off an 11-8 loss at Binghamton.

Burke's save total was a career high, topping the 16 he had in an overtime loss at Cornell two years ago. But 18 Raider turnovers proved too much to overcome as Colgate lost to the Bearcats for the first time since 2011.

Anthony Abbadessa, Will Blumenberg and first-year Griffin Brown all scored two goals apiece for the Raiders. Brown's were the first two of his collegiate career, while Blumenberg doubled his output after scoring his debut goal in last week's opener.

First-year Nicky Petkevich also scored his first collegiate goal, and Chase Wittich added his second in as many weeks.

Tom Moore's four goals and three from Sean Gilroy led the Bearcats in their season opener.

Bottom Line
• Binghamton 11, Colgate 8

Raider Scoring Recap
• Binghamton scored twice in the opening 2½ minutes before Brown pulled one back with still 11:25 showing.
• Wittich's goal in the final minute-plus drew the Raiders within 3-2 at the quarter break.
• That's was all the offense Colgate could muster for the first half as Binghamton led 5-2 at intermission.
• The Bearcats made it 6-2 before Abbadessa scored midway in the third period.
• Two more Binghamton goals made it an 8-3 game.
• But Colgate found life in the form of a three-goal run in the last 2:30 of the quarter.
• Blumenberg scored with 2½ minutes remaining in the period, followed by Abbadessa at 1:30 and Brown for his second of the game with 48 seconds left. It was 8-6.
• Gilroy and Moore pushed the Binghamton lead back to 10-6 toward the middle portion of the fourth quarter before Colgate made one last charge.
• Blumenberg scored with 4:52 showing and Petkevich found the net for the first time with 1:52 to play.
• But that was it as the Bearcats scored on an empty-net tally in the final minute.
