Late-Game Heroics Fall Just Short in 78-76 Loss at Marist

O’Brien’s Potential Game-Winning, Last-Second Half Court Shot Called Back

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Colgate missed picking up its first road win of the season by just fractions of a second Wednesday night in a 78-76 loss at Marist.

The Raiders erased a 19-point second half deficit to pull even with the Red Foxes in the final minutes. With Marist ahead 78-76 and 0.6 seconds left on the clock, the Red Foxes heaved up an inbound, but senior Sean O'Brien caught the ball at half court and drained an improbable half-court shot. While the basket put the scoreboard at 79-78 momentarily, the officiating crew overturned the call after a lengthy review as Marist walked away with the 78-76 win.

Sophomore Will Rayman led the way with 17 points, 15 of which came during Colgate's second-half comeback. O'Brien and first-year Jordan Burns added 13 points apiece, while junior Dana Batt followed with 12.

The Raiders held an early 5-2 lead, but three Marist three-pointers helped the Red Foxes rattle off an 11-3 run over the next 3:15 to pull ahead 13-8 with just over 13 minutes on the clock. Colgate was within one at 19-18 following an O'Brien layup, but Marist answered with eight of the next 10 to put the Raiders in a 27-20 hole at 7:52.

Colgate made its next three field goals, beginning with a trey from first-year Jack Ferguson, and added two free throws to string together a 10-2 streak that put Colgate in front 30-29 with 5:11 left on the first-half clock. Marist scored 17 of the half's final 21 points as the Raiders went just 1-for-7 in the final four minutes of the term and the Red Foxes carried a 46-34 lead into halftime.

Marist took its momentum into the second half, opening the term on an 11-4 streak to stretch its lead to 57-38 with just over 15 minutes to play.

Fifteen points from Rayman then helped Colgate comprise a 32-12 run over the next 11:13 that completely erased the Marist lead and put the Raiders in front 70-69. Colgate shot 11-for-15 from the field during the stretch and forced seven Marist turnovers as the Raiders were ahead by one with 3:49 to play following an O'Brien layup.

The Red Foxes scored nine of the next 13 points to jump back in front 78-74 with six seconds to play. Burns hit a jumper with two seconds left to put the score at 78-76. Following a Marist turnover, O'Brien executed the miraculous game-ending play that missed sending the Raiders home with a win by just milliseconds.
