HAMILTON – The Colgate volleyball team put together a strong offensive day to earn a big 3-1 win over second-place Army Sunday afternoon at Cotterell Court.
The victory moves Colgate into a tie for fourth place in the Patriot League standings with Lehigh. After starting league play 0-5, Colgate has since gone 8-1 over its last nine matches to move itself into a battle for a Patriot League Tournament berth.
Colgate finished the match with an impressive .350 hitting percentage, it's highest attack percentage against a Patriot League opponent this season. First-year
Alli Lowe led the Raiders once again with 18 kills and a .395 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Taylor Flaherty followed with 13 kills and a .480 clip.
A back-and-forth opening set saw nine tie scores and four lead changes as neither team led by more than two until the closing points. The Raiders trailed 20-19, but kills from Lowe and junior
Jaelah Hutchison helped Colgate pull ahead 22-20. Army pulled within one at 22-21 and 23-22, but a kill from Lowe and a service ace from junior
Peighton McRobie put away the first set 25-22 to give the Raiders a 1-0 match lead. Lowe tallied nine kills in the opening term and Colgate hit a blistering .556 as a team.
The Raiders raced out to a quick 8-2 lead in the second set with the help of two Lowe kills and two McRobie aces to force an early Army timeout. The Black Knights pulled within three at 11-8, but it would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. Colgate scored 14 of the set's final 19 points to capture the dominant 25-13 set-two win and take a 2-0 match lead.
The third set was much like the first as it saw 13 tie scores and six lead changes. The back-and-forth battle ended when Army broke a 27-all draw with a block and kill from Carolyn Bockrath to keep the Black Knights alive with the 29-27 victory.
Army held a 10-9 lead in the fourth set before the Raiders strung together a 5-1 run that gave Colgate a 14-11 advantage. The Black Knights were back within one at 16-15, but two Army errors and two kills from Lowe followed to stretch the Raider lead to 20-15. The Black Knights were never able to recover as a kill from Flaherty capped off the 25-18 set-four victory and 3-1 match win.
