Raiders Score First Season-Opening Win Since 2009

Second-Half Surge Lifts Colgate Past Canisius, 70-63; King Opens with Double-Double

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Colgate is 1-0.

Not since 2009 have the Raiders been able to say that on the women's basketball front, but head coach Bill Cleary's charges fought their way through a see-saw affair to topple Canisius 70-63 Friday night.

Summer King led the visitors with 15 points and 12 rebounds for her second career double-double. Kateri Stone scored 13 points, all in the second half, to help Colgate outpace Canisius 39-25 after intermission.

The Raiders built a 22-9 lead late in the first quarter, only to see it melt away before halftime. Canisius outscored Colgate 22-6 in the second period and led 38-31 at the break.

The Golden Griffins made it 41-31 early in the third quarter before Colgate began its comeback. The Raiders put 23 points on the board in the third and trailed just 55-54 entering the final period.

Colgate took the lead for keeps at 56-55 on Tegan Graham's layup with 9:42 remaining. The Raiders held Canisius scoreless for the first 5:40 of the fourth quarter but could muster only five points themselves during that stretch.

Canisius pulled within 60-59 on a layup by Margret Halfdanardottir with 3:23 showing. But Graham followed with a three-point play and Rachel Thompson scored four straight points in an 8-0 run that iced it.

Graham scored a career-high 10 for Colgate and Thompson added 13 to go with four steals.
