HAMILTON – The Colgate men's basketball team rebounded from a poor-shooting first half to have a strong offensive second half, but Canisius shot its way past the Raiders 85-67 in an exhibition game Wednesday night at Cotterell Court. All proceeds from the exhibition game will be donated to the One America Appeal in benefit of hurricane relief.
First-year
Jordan Burns led the team with 17 points, while sophomore
Will Rayman (14) and junior
Dana Batt (12) also finished in double-figures.
The Raiders held a 12-10 lead following three-pointers from Rayman and senior
Sean O'Brien at the 11:54 mark. Canisius answered with a 19-5 streak over the next eight minutes as the Golden Griffins pulled ahead 29-17 with 4:33 left on the first-half clock.
Four-straight points from Rayman helped the Raiders pick up the pace in the closing minutes, before Colgate added on four free throws in the final 1:15, but Canisius carried a 39-25 lead into halftime.
Rayman scored seven of Colgate's first nine points out of the half, but the Golden Griffs still held onto a 15-point lead at 49-34 with 14:25 left to play. The Raiders heated up offensively over the next few minutes, including a personal 8-0 stretch from first-year
Jack Ferguson, but Canisius had an answer for nearly every Colgate basket.
The Golden Griffs held onto a double-digit lead the rest of the way to pull away for the 85-67 victory.
