HAMILTON – A seven-point performance from sophomore
Mara Cosentino led the Colgate women's soccer team to a dominant 4-1 win over Lafayette Saturday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field. The Raiders are unbeaten in their last seven games, including all five Patriot League contests that Colgate has played.
Cosentino netted her first-career hat trick and added an assist for a total of seven points. The Glastonbury, Conn. native had a hand in all four of Colgate's goals. Sophomore
Abby Sotomayor dished out two assists, while classmate
Lindsey Wiley added the Raiders' final goal of the evening.
Cosentino scored just 51 seconds into the game as she collected a ball that was being bobbled around the box and buried it into the lower left-hand corner of the net to put the Raiders up 1-0. Lafayette keeper Kelly O'Brien made two fantastic diving saves in the next four minutes to keep the Leopards' deficit at 1-0.
It didn't last long, however, as Cosentino struck again in the seventh minute. Sotomayor passed the ball to Cosentino at the top of the box before the sophomore ripped a missile over the head of O'Brien to increase the Colgate lead to 2-0.
Colgate continued to pressure the Leopards and Cosentino was able to complete her hat trick in the 22nd minute. Sotomayor sent another crisp pass to Cosentino who once again riffled the ball into the lower left-hand corner to work the Raider lead to 3-0.
Colgate finished the first half with a dominant 22-2 shot advantage as the Raiders took their 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Colgate pressure didn't cease in the second half as the Raiders continued to maintain possession. Wiley added another Colgate goal in the 57th minute when she collected a ball from Cosentino and slipped it right by O'Brien to work the Raider lead to 4-0.
The Leopards were able to get on the board in the 77th minute on a tally from Krista Kissell, but it wasn't nearly enough as Colgate walked away with the 4-1 win.

Head Coach
Kathy Brawn
- "We switched some things up at practice this week and I saw a lot of those things come into play tonight, which was great. I don't think we took care of the ball as well as we could have in the second half against a Lafayette team that was putting on added pressure. We'll work on fixing that up in training this week."
- "What a great performance by Mara Cosentino. The people that went in the game did well for us. We saw some really good things tonight, but there's still things to work on and fix."
- "The league doesn't get any easier as we get further into the schedule. It only becomes more apparent of which teams are where in the standings and what you need to do as the regular season dwindles down. We need to stay focused on the next opponent and not get too far ahead of ourselves. We have to take care of what we need to do and come out ready for every game."
