BOSTON – Boston University got out to an early lead and held on to defeat the Colgate women's soccer team 3-1 in the regular-season finale Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Raiders have secured a Patriot League Quarterfinal home game Tuesday night and the No. 4 seed in the tournament.
The fourth-seeded Raiders will host No. 5 Lehigh Tuesday night in the Patriot League Quarterfinals at 7 p.m. at Beyer-Small '76 Field. The Raiders and Mountain Hawks played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in Bethlehem, Pa. in the regular-season meeting on Sept. 27. The winner of the quarterfinal matchup will advance to Friday's Patriot League Semifinals. The semifinal and championship matches will take place at Navy, the tournament's No. 1 seed.
Sophomore keeper
Kelly Chiavaro made two saves in the opening 10 minutes of play. The Raiders threatened with two corner kicks and two blocked shots in the 14th minute, but the BU defense stepped up to keep the game scoreless.
The Terriers were able to take a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute as Jacki Carty poked the ball just past a diving Chiavaro. BU doubled its lead less than two minutes later when Alivya Wimmer found the back of the net to work the Terrier advantage to 2-0 in the 29th minute.
Colgate answered right back as sophomore
Abby Sotomayor worked her way around a Terrier defender and sent the ball into the far post to net her sixth goal of the season and pull the Raiders within 2-1 in the 30th minute.
Colgate generated a few quality chances in the second half, including a shot from senior
Eliza Doll that just missed when it hit the post, but the Raiders weren't able to add anything else. BU added an insurance tally late in the second half to secure the 3-1 victory and No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
