WORCESTER, Mass. – The Colgate women's soccer team played Holy Cross to a double-overtime scoreless draw in a defensive road battle Wednesday night.
The tie stretches the Raiders' unbeaten streak to 10-straight games as Colgate has gone 8-0-2 during the run. The Raider defense secured its fourth shutout of the season, while sophomore keeper
Kelly Chiavaro played a strong game to record her third clean sheet of the year.
The draw, coupled with results from around the league, allowed Colgate to clinch its berth into the Patriot League Tournament. The Raiders will be making a postseason appearance for the 10th-straight season. Seeding is still to be decided based on results of the final two regular-season games on Oct. 21 and 28. The tournament gets underway on Oct. 31 with the quarterfinal round, while the semifinals will take place Nov. 3 and the championship match is set for Nov. 5.
Senior
Emily Crichlow registered the first shot of the game in the fifth minute, but Holy Cross keeper Caroline Cashion was there to make the diving save. The Raiders kept up the pressure and had three more quality chances in the next 15 minutes before Chiavaro punched a Holy Cross shot over the crossbar in the 21st minute to keep the game scoreless.
The Crusaders countered with a few minutes of strong pressure, but Colgate regained momentum in the final 15 minutes of the term. A shot from sophomore
Abby Sotomayor provided the final strong chance of the opening term, but the ball bounced off the crossbar as the game went to halftime scoreless.
First-year
Ellis Miller forced Cashion to make two saves in the opening eight minutes of the second half and the Raiders out-shot the Crusaders 5-2 in the first 20 minutes of the term, but Colgate wasn't able to find the back of the net.
Much like the first half, Holy Cross countered with an onslaught of its own, but the Raiders were able to emerge unharmed as the regulation buzzer rang and the game was sent to overtime.
Colgate peppered the Crusaders with numerous opportunities in both overtime periods, but Cashion and the Holy Cross backline held on as the teams settled for the double-overtime draw.
