Men’s Soccer Rallies for 2-1 Win over Bucknell

Two-Goal Answer in 48-Second Span Lifts Raiders Past Bison

HAMILTON – Talk about a turnaround.

Colgate went from trailing to tied to leading in a 92-second span, and then held on for a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bucknell here Saturday.

The Raiders and Bison played scoreless soccer for 77 minutes until Bucknell's Nick King scored a rebound goal to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. Dan Bank tried the original shot that was blocked, but King was on the spot and drove his fourth goal of the season into the lower left corner.

Colgate answered on its ensuing possession. After Kentaro Morrison was fouled in the penalty area, Jared Stroud stepped up and drilled home the PK for his second goal of the year.

But the Raiders weren't done. Less than another minute later, Tim Oberg fed Freddy Jonsson at the top of the box. Jonsson backed his way down before turning to his left and right-footing it into the right corner midway through the 80th minute.

Colgate had a pair of good chances to score in the next five minutes and then Bucknell applied pressure right to the final whistle, but the Raiders held on.

The win was Colgate's second straight in Patriot League play and vaulted the Raiders (2-2-1, 7 points) past Bucknell (2-3-0, 6 points) in the standings just beyond the midway point.

From the Sources
Head Coach Erik Ronning
  • "Any time Bucknell and Colgate get together, it's always a very entertaining and tightly contended game. Today was no different.
  • "We responded really well after they scored. That PK call kind of rejuvenated us. Scoring that goal and getting another one – it was a great goal by Freddy. I'm very pleased with the way they responded and came back from down a goal. It didn't seem like we had the juice in our legs, but then we got it back."

Senior Jared Stroud
  • "It was such a big turnaround. Going down a goal in a Patriot League game like that, a swing game, it's tough. A lot of what happened there was our seniors and juniors stepped up. Kentaro did a great job getting the penalty and that got us back into after. After that, the momentum switched into our favor. It was a great win."
