Corvi Scores Twice in Raiders Thriller vs. American

Colgate Leads Early in Second Half but American Comes Back to Win, 4-2

HAMILTON – Michaela Corvi (Newburyport, Massachusetts) scored a pair of goals and Maria Krull (Leicester, Massachusetts) recorded a season-high 20 saves as the Raiders battled the American Eagles before falling 4-2 Saturday morning at Tyler's Field.

Among the accomplishments for the Raiders on the afternoon was Krull becoming the fifth player in program history to record her 500th career save, ending the game with 506.

The Raiders played one of their best games in the April Cornell-era as they took a 2-1 lead over the Eagles in the first half and went into the break tied 2-2.

Both teams were scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the first half before American's Kathryn Roncoroni netted the first goal of the game off a corner for the Eagles.

American's lead did not last long; however, as Corvi and the Raiders stormed back to tie the game and take the lead. The Raiders first goal came nearly three minutes after the Eagles' goal. Colgate inserted the corner where the ball found Caroline Schaefer (Avon, Connecticut) at the top of the circle. She made a perfect pass through traffic to the back door where Corvi was waiting to tap home the goal.

Corvi added her second of the game and fifth of the season just over two minutes later as she dribbled the ball down to the right side of the circle before striking a bullet past American goalkeeper Maura Jacobs.

Colgate maintained its lead over American for much of the remainder of the half until Haley Bowcutt scored her 10th of the season with just 1:37 left in the half, sneaking the shot past Krull from near the end line.

Krull faced a barrage of shots in the second half as the Raiders were outshot 16-1 as she managed to make 14 saves, including several diving saves to just barely redirect the ball away from the goal.

The Eagles scored 3:20 into the first half to take the lead for good despite Krull's phenomenal second half and added an insurance to with 9:48 remaining in the second half to claim a 4-2 lead for the final.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach April Cornell
"Molly did a really nice job, right now all of our seniors take a game to do some pregame motivational stuff as part of being leaders and upperclassmen, I wanted them to have a hand in the pregame preparation so I think that's a great thing to get them involved."

"I'm really happy, especially on the attacking side, to have some great execution. Michaela was a huge spark for us today. For them to continue to build that confidence, knowing that they can execute, combine and develop the play is huge. We have so many first-year players playing on our attacking and midfield lines, for them to click and gel is so exciting."

"Michaela is such a talented player, she's so fast and just driven. When she makes her mind up to do something, she's going to find a way to make it happen. Those are the type of attackers that I look for because that type of heart, energy and enthusiasm is contagious with the rest of the attack."

"There are no words for Maria's performance. She just brings it to another level. She doesn't get down, she doesn't let a certain play affect her and she just lets it go. She continues to set the standards for the rest of the team with how we're going to play and how we're going to step up."

"Right after the game, we were ready to go instantly because we're so happy with the improvements that we're making in our game that we feel good about the progress throughout the season. Knowing that we're competing and proving every single time we step out on the field it gives us that drive and energy to pick right back up where we left off."

Freshman Michaela Corvi
"American's a really strong team so that gave us a lot of confidence and that's essential going into the second half, especially since we're getting tired from the first half and we need to stay focused for the next 35 minutes. It was unfortunate that they got their lead back but this can go into tomorrow's game and we're happy with how we played today."

"It wasn't just me, it was a team effort. We've been working a lot on our attack and attacking with speed; I think we really executed that today."

Senior Maria Krull
"We came out with a lot of energy all game today and for the first time we really saw us play our full team offense, full team defense and the product of it was a 2-2 tie at the half.

"American is a very, very good team. They always bring it; they always have speed, control and composure. For us to come out and give them a game, and to compete with them, that's awesome to see. We didn't have that hunger and that fight in the past, but we have it now and its great to see that come to the program."

"I was pretty locked in, I was seeing the ball really well and doing my best to keep the team in the game. I wanted to give us a chance to compete with these guys and do what we could to try and win the game."
