WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – In a battle between two teams that won their respective regular-season conference championships a season ago, it was Colgate that was came out on top Sunday as the Raiders picked up a 3-0 victory at Monmouth.
Seniors
Zach Tamen and
Ethan Kutler both scored goals in the opening 30 minutes to give the Raiders an early lead before junior
Jared Stroud added a last-minute tally to cement the 3-0 win. Senior keeper
Ricky Brown made six saves, one of which was on a second-half penalty kick chance, to secure his third clean sheet of the season.
Monmouth fired the first shot of the game in the third minute, but Brown was there to make the stop. After a trio of corner kicks, Tamen was able to put the Raiders on the board in the 20th minute when sophomore
Aram Ouligian deflected the ball into the box and Tamen used his left foot to bury it into the far post and put Colgate ahead 1-0.
Tim Oberg and
Oliver Harris forced Monmouth keeper Chris Seager to make a pair of saves quickly after the Raiders jumped ahead. Kutler added an insurance tally in the 29th minute when the Hawks defense played a ball back to Seager, but he wasn't able to handle it and Kutler was there to tap it in and extend the Raider lead to 2-0.
Colgate kept up the pressure for the rest of the half, out-shooting Monmouth 3-0 for the remainder of the term as the Raiders took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
A Colgate penalty in the 18-yard box led to a Monmouth penalty kick opportunity 15 minutes into the second half, but Brown made a diving save to his right to thwart the attempt and keep the Raiders ahead 2-0.
Brown made two more big stops down the stretch to keep the momentum on Colgate's side. Stroud then cemented the victory for the Raiders in the final minute when he fired a ball into the far post from across the box to help Colgate to the 3-0 victory.
