HAMILTON – The Raiders defeated Navy in four sets in their first Patriot League matchup on Cotterell Court. Colgate topped the Mids 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17.
The first set was back-and-forth for the first six points, but then Colgate went on a 7-3 run to take a 13-9 advantage over the Mids. The run was fueled by two kills by
Katie Stansbury and a kill apiece by
Jaelah Hutchison and
Katie Stebbins. Navy would use an 8-3 run of its own to take a 17-16 lead over the Raiders, the first lead for the Mids since 6-5. With Colgate down a point late in the set,
Lauren Sanderson came up with two huge kills, giving the Raiders the 23-22 lead. Colgate would not look back from there, securing the 25-23 with another Sanderson kill.
Kathleen Harris, Stansbury and Sanderson each pitched in three kills in the frame.
The second frame looked very similar to the first, with the set being tied at 9-9. Navy went on an 11-4 run to take a 20-13 lead, Colgate's largest deficit of the set. The Raiders fought their way back to within two points at 22-20, thanks to four errors by the Mids. A kill from Stansbury got Colgate the closest they had been since 9-9, but Navy closed out the frame with a kill of their own, taking the set 25-23. Stansbury and Hutchison each contributed three kills in the game.
Colgate never trailed in the third set, defeating Navy 25-20. The Raiders held their largest lead of the set at 13-7 and the Mids would not get closer than three points for the rest of the way. Navy looked to be gaining some momentum when they got the deficit to five at 24-19, but Harris had back-to-back kills to put the game away for Colgate. The senior recorded five kills in the frame, while Hutchison and Stansbury each pitched in three kills.
Once again, Colgate held the momentum in the fourth set, topping Navy 25-17. The Raiders trailed for the first six points of the frame, but used 13-5 run to take a 16-10 lead, causing the Mids to use their first timeout. Within that stretch, Harris registered three kills and
Katie Stebbins notched two of her own. Colgate held at least a five-point advantage over Navy for the rest of the set. Harris finished the frame with seven kills and Stebbins registered five.
Colgate returns to Cotterell Court tomorrow to face Lehigh at 4:00 p.m.
