Colgate Drops Four-Setter at Army

Raiders Fall 3-1 Despite Career Night by Flaherty

BOX SCORE

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Colgate took the first set from Army West Point in the Patriot League matchup, but fell in the final three sets (13-25, 25-23, 25-19, 29-27).

Taylor Flaherty recorded a career-high 13 kills in the match and Jaelah Hutchison pitched in 12 kills and hit .500.

The Raiders claimed the first set from Army 25-13. Colgate jumped out to an early 9-2 lead over the Knights thanks in part to two kills by both Hutchison and Flaherty. Hutchison also pitched in two service aces during the run. Army began closing in on the Raider lead at 12-9, but Colgate used a 13-4 run to close out the frame. During a late 8-0 Raider run, Hutchison notched two kills and her and Molly Smith recorded two blocks. Flaherty and Hutchison finished the set with four kills apiece.

Colgate once again got out to an early lead against Army but could not hold off a late Knight run, dropping the set 25-23. The Raiders started the frame on 8-3 run behind two kills by Jessica Lathan and two service aces by Katie Stansbury. The Knights would continue to battle back, fighting to within two points of the Raiders for the majority of the set. When it looked like the Raiders held all the momentum, Army would use a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the entire match and they would not look back. Flaherty recorded four kills in the frame to lead the Raider way.

The third set was back-and-forth in the early stages, but Army used a 9-3 run to take a 14-8 lead over the Raiders. The Knights would hold on for the rest of the way, claiming the frame 25-19. Colgate looked to be gaining momentum in the middle of the set, using a 3-0 burst to lessen Army's lead to four, but they would not get closer than that the rest of the way. Hutchison and Flaherty each contributed three kills in the frame.

Despite a tough Raider presence, the Knights were able to claim the fourth set 29-27. Army used a 4-0 run to start the set, but Colgate battled back to tie the frame at 6. After a timeout by the Knights, they went on a 7-2 run to take a 13-8 lead over the Raiders. Colgate fought its way back into the set multiple times and took its first lead of the frame at 25-24 thanks to an Army attack error. Two kills by the Knights would once again give Army the advantage at 26-25, but the Raiders would hang on to tie the set at 27. Army was able to gain control again after a huge kill and went on to win the frame after a Colgate attack error.

From the Source
-"We battled once again, but came up short against a good Army team. We had our chances and didn't close it out. It's tough when a starter goes out an hour before the match starts."
"I was proud of Jaelah as she lead with her play and mentality. Also, Taylor did a great job changing positions an hour before game time due to an injury. Katie Stansbury also brought her game."
- "
We need to get ready for another big weekend. It'll be great to be home."
