Colgate Opens Cornell Invite Play

The Raiders Battled the Big Red in Its First Game of the Invitational

Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. – Colgate fought hard against rival Cornell Saturday, forcing them to four sets.

Ultimately the Big Red held on to beat the Raiders 3-1 (27-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-21).

The first set was back-and-forth to the end between Colgate and Cornell. The Big Red won the frame 27-25 after battling back from being down 24-21. The Raiders had the momentum for a moment behind two huge plays by Kathleen Harris at the net, making the game 19-16. After a timeout, the Big Red tied the set at 24 and Colgate could not withstand Cornell's attacks. Harris led the Raider way with five kills in the frame.

Colgate came back swinging in the second set, topping the Big Red 25-18 in the frame. The Raiders never trailed in the set and jumped out to an early 8-4 lead. Colgate extended the gap to eight points with two kills from Harris and a service ace from Peighton McRobie. The Big Red looked like they would once again fight their way back into the match with a 4-0 run, but back-to-back kills from Harris shut down the Cornell momentum. Katie Stansbury and Harris each contributed four kills in the frame.

Cornell's fast start was too much to handle for the Raiders and Colgate dropped the third set 25-18. The Big Red went on a 5-0 run fueled by a great defensive play to take a 13-9 lead. Once down, the Raiders could not get the deficit closer than four points for the rest of the way. Flaherty and Stebbins each recorded three kills in the frame.

The Raiders got out to a 10-5 lead over Cornell in the fourth set, but the Big Red fought back to take the set 25-21. A kill by Stansbury tied the set at 20, but Cornell went on a 5-1 run to close out the game.

Senior Harris led the squad with a season-high 16 kills and 15-digs, while Stebbins and Stansbury contributed 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Setter Molly Smith dished out 40 assists and McAndrews logged 13 digs.
