HAMILTON –
Colgate started fast against the UConn Huskies, taking the first set in the season opener. But ultimately UConn held on to beat Colgate 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18).

The first team to five points in each set was able to maintain momentum and go on to take the set.

The Raiders never trailed in the opening set and went on a pair of three-point runs to distance themselves from the Huskies. Sophomore Jaelah Hutchison came up with a huge block to stop an early three-point run by UConn. Kathleen Harris contributed four kills in the first set, while Katie Stansbury, Katie Stebbins and Taylor Flaherty each added three kills in the first.

But UConn quickly reacted, taking the second set 25-17. The Raiders were in an early 7-1 hole and could not come back to catch the Huskies. Harris matched her kill total from the first set with four, while Molly Smith and Stebbins added two each in the frame for the Raiders.

Colgate jumped to an early 4-2 lead in the third set, but shortly thereafter UConn responded with an 8-1 run and did not look back. The Huskies led by 10 on three separate occasions in this set, and despite a three-point Raiders run went on to finish the set, 25-16.

In the final set, UConn went on a 12-6 run to take a 15-10 lead and the Raiders were never closer than four points for the rest of the way. Sophomore Amanda Smith led Colgate in the finale, recording three kills.

Senior Kathleen Harris led the Raiders with 10 kills and Madison McAndrews recorded 13 digs. Taylor Flaherty logged nine kills in her first collegiate match and junior Molly Smith dished out 38 assists.
