HAMILTON – Colgate Softball split a Saturday doubleheader with Boston University, taking the opener 1-0 before falling in the nightcap, 9-2.
The Raiders blanked their opponent for the fourth time this season in Game 1, despite BU's Melanie Russell posting 15 strikeouts. Colgate received strong pitching from senior
Brigit Ieuter and the Raiders backed that up with solid defense to secure the 1-0 victory.
Ieuter earned her ninth complete game in the circle after allowing just eight hits and two walks.
Gillian Murray was credited with the game-winning hit with her solo home run over the left field fence in the third inning.
In the nightcap, the Terriers jumped in front 2-0 early but the Raiders wouldn't go away. Colgate answered in the third after
Holly Geranen singled through the left side to bring home two runs to knot the score. Unfortunately, BU broke the deadlock in the fifth with a big inning, registering five runs to pull in front 7-2. The Terriers added two more runs in the sixth and despite some small rallies from the Raiders in the remaining innings, the visitors held on to win.
Murray, Geranen and
Katie Bushee all finished with two hits in the twin bill, while
Marisa Dowling and
Meghan Romero chipped in one hit each. Bushee, Murray and Romero accounted for the three Raider runs. Geranen and Murray earned both of Colgate's RBI's on the day.
Kyle Griswold got the starting nod in Game 2, pitching 4.2 innings allowing nine hits and seven runs, four of which were earned.
Megan Carnase came in for relief closing out the final 2.1 innings, giving up three hits and two runs.
The two teams will play a rubber match on Sunday at noon on Eaton Street Field. Prior to the start Colgate will honor six special seniors, who will play in their final collegiate game in the Maroon and White.

Straight From The Source
•
Colgate head coach Melissa Finley: (on her thoughts from the twin bill) "I know this team came to the field to battle today and we were able to hang on to our one run lead in the first game behind Brigit's standout performance on the mound. We also had some key defensive plays and stepped up when we needed to get the job done.
"Game two was another battle and we were tied going into late innings before they pulled ahead and we let the wheels fall off a little bit. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and having the opportunity to honor our six seniors."
