HAMILTON – Colgate saw Army West Point notch the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth to steal a 4-3 extra innings victory here Thursday afternoon.
The Black Knights took the early 1-0 edge after the opening inning and then added another run in the third to make it a 2-0 ballgame. Colgate would not waver though as the Raiders posted a strong three-run fourth to pull in front 3-2. Unfortunately, the visitors knotted the score in the top of the fifth to make for an exciting final few innings.
Army loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs but
Kyle Griswold forced three straight popups to strand the runners on base. Colgate answered in the bottom half of the inning by placing runners on second and third with two outs, but weren't able to bring them home.
The Black Knights then scored what would be the eventual game-winning run in the eighth and despite a two-out single from
Gillian Murray during Colgate's last at bats, held on to secure the win.
Holly Geranen led the Raiders on offense after finishing 2-for-4 with a run. Six other student-athletes recorded one hit each, with
Pami White and
Brigit Ieuter accounting for Colgate's two RBI. La Terra and White registered the Raiders other two runs in the game.
Three Colgate pitchers saw action in the game with Ieuter getting the starting nod. The senior pitched three innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs. Griswold then came in for relief giving up three hits and two runs, one of which was earned, in four innings of work.
Megan Carnase finished out the final inning not conceding a hit.

Colgate head coach Melissa Finley: (on her thoughts from the game) "While we didn't get the outcome we wanted to it was another one of those games that could have gone either way. We hit the ball very well and we did a good job of hitting it where it was pitched. Unfortunately, we hit it right at people sometimes.
"Army did a great job keeping the pressure on us defensively and we did as much as we could to keep them off the board but in the end they won the battle. Everyone contributed today and even though I am disappointed with the loss, I was happy with the energy and fight the team brought to the field."
