HAMILTON –
Colgate Softball opened up Patriot League play with a doubleheader split against Army West Point here Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders took game one 2-1, before the Black Knights recorded a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.

Leading the way for Colgate was rookie Lauren La Terra, who finished 4-for-6 with two RBI and a run. Katie Bushee added three hits and three runs during her five at bats, while Holly Geranen and Gillian Murray rattled off two hits each. Geranen posted an RBI as well.

Marisa Dowling and Baillie Jorth combined for two RBI, while Meghan Romero accounted for one of Colgate's final six runs on the day. 22894

Senior Brigit Ieuter earned the win in the opener, after allowing just four hits and one unearned run in her seven complete innings. The Wilmette, Illinois, native fanned five batters during her time in the circle.

Ieuter again got the starting nod in game two and pitched two innings, giving up two hits and one run. Kyle Griswold came in for relief going 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three of which were earned. Megan Carnase closed out the final 2.1 innings, giving up five hits and two runs. Griswold and Carnase combined to strike out three batters.

GAME ONE
Army jumped out in front 1-0 after the opening half inning of game one. Colgate quickly answered in the bottom of the first after Bushee was hit by a pitch to start. On the ensuing play, the junior stole second before reaching third on a throwing error. During the next at bat, Geranen brought her home with a single up the middle to knot the score.

The Raiders tallied the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a single from Jorth. Romero started the rally with a walk to get a runner on base. Tara Grennan converted on a sacrifice bunt to advance Romero over to second. The Black Knights then earned the second out of the inning but on the ensuing play, Jorth singled up the middle, which allowed Romero enough time to cross home plate. 22895

Colgate retired Army in order during the next two innings to secure the win.

GAME TWO
In the nightcap, Army saw its leadoff hitter drill a shot over the center field fence to take the early 1-0 edge. The Black Knights tacked on another run in the fourth but Colgate wouldn't go away.

The Raiders started the bottom half of the inning with a La Terra walk. Pami White then converted on a sacrifice bunt to advance La Terra over to second. Romero grounded out on the next at bat, but not before shifting La Terra over to third. Then with two outs, Murray found a gap by singling up the middle to bring the runner home and cut into the lead at 2-1.

Army responded with a big fifth inning, recording three runs, creating a 5-1 deficit between the teams.

Again, Colgate answered with two runs in the bottom half to keep its hopes alive. Bushee singled to start the inning before advancing to second on a stolen base. Geranen followed with a walk and then during the next at bat Dowling reached on a fielder's choice, erasing Geranen from the bases. La Terra then stepped up and found herself in the batters box with one out and runners on the corners. The rookie blasted a double to deep right center, bringing in two Colgate runs and cutting the lead down to 5-3.

Unfortunately, two more runs in the sixth for the Black Knights handed them a 7-3 edge and despite a run late in the seventh from the Raiders, Army went on to earn the win.

Due to projected bad weather, Sunday's single between these two teams has been postponed. A make-up date has yet to be determined. 22896

Straight From The Source
• Colgate head coach Melissa Finley: (on her thoughts from game one) "It was refreshing to see the team ready to compete today. Brigit (Ieuter) had a stand out performance on the mound in game one and we had some clutch hitting from Holly Geranen and Baillie Jorth. All around it was a great team effort and it was great to see them play as a unit."

(on her thoughts from game two) "We competed hard in the second game but unfortunately we hit a lull early and dug a hole that was too hard for us to get out of."
