Grennan, Geranen Lead Colgate at Princeton

Raiders Drop Twin Bill to Tigers, 7-4 and 9-6; Grennan, Gadiano Notched Home Runs

PRINCETON, N.J. – Colgate Softball dropped a doubleheader at Princeton here Saturday afternoon despite 16 hits on the day.

The Raiders used strong at bats throughout the course of the twin bill but saw their host take both games, 7-4 and 9-6.

Tara Grennan led the Raiders going 3-for-7 with three RBI and two runs. Two of those hits were long balls, handing her No. 1 and 2 on the year. Holly Geranen also recorded three hits on the day, while adding an RBI, a run and walk.

Three other Raider players tallied two hits each in Gillian Murray, Pami White and Meghan Romero. Both White and Romero registered an RBI, while White accounted for two runs and Romero one.

Brigit Ieuter got the start in the opener, pitching two innings allowing four hits and six runs, four of which were earned. The senior struck out two batters during her time in the circle. Fellow classmate Megan Carnase came in for relief giving up just three hits and one earned run during her four innings of work. The Norfolk, Massachusetts, native fanned four batters, shifting her season number to 12.

In the nightcap, three Colgate pitchers saw action in Kyle Griswold, Murray and Carnase. Griswold earned the start and gave up just one hit but accounted for four runs in 2.1 innings of work. Murray came in for relief pitching 0.2 innings, allowing four hits and four runs, two of which were earned. Carnase then closed out the game for the Raiders giving up three hits and one run during her three innings in the circle.

Colgate jumped in front 1-0 early in game one but saw Princeton notch four runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 4-1 lead. The Raiders responded with two runs, but again the Tigers found their stride with two additional runs to increase their edge to 6-3 after the second. Colgate tried to rally in the fifth with a home run from Grennan but the hosts answered in the bottom half to ultimately secure the victory.

In game two, Colgate again took the early 1-0 advantage. Unfortunately, the Tigers answered with a big third inning, scoring five runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Raiders grabbed one run back in the top of the fifth but another three-run bottom half broke the game open at 8-2. The two teams each recorded a run in the fifth to make it a 9-3 ballgame heading into the final two innings. The Raiders then saw Grennan blast her second ball over the outfield fence in the sixth followed by a two-run shot from Gadiano in the seventh but the Raider rally was too little too late.

Colgate has a quick turnaround as it faces Albany on Tuesday in its home opener at Eaton Street Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at the start.

Straight From The Source
• Colgate head coach Melissa Finley: (on her thoughts from the doubleheader) "Today was tough because I feel like we were able to put some runs on the board and generate offense where we have been lacking. But our starting pitching let us down. We gave up way too many free bases and didn't take care of the ball on defense. We are going to continue to work hard to play well on both sides of the ball and bring it all together."
