Two Solid for Colgate at Stetson Tourney

Colgate Falls Twice on Second Day of Stetson Tournament, Including Extra Innings Heartbreaker

DELAND, Fla. – Four Raiders notched two or more hits here Saturday afternoon but Colgate Softball fell twice on the second day of the Stetson Invitational.

The Raiders dropped a nail-bitter in eight innings during their nightcap with Providence, 6-5. Prior to that, Colgate fell 4-0 to Southern Illinois in its first game of the day.

In game two, the Friars took a 3-0 lead after the second inning, but Colgate quickly answered in the top of third to knot the score. The Raiders then pulled in front 4-3 after rookie Lauren La Terra drilled her first career home run in the top of the fourth. Providence answered right back in the bottom half of the inning to take the 5-4 edge.

Colgate then converted on the game-tying run in the top of the sixth to ultimately send the game into extra innings. The Friars, however, were able to score the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth, thanks in part to international rules, which places a baserunner on second to start extra frames.

In Colgate's first game of the day, it battled with Southern Illinois for three scoreless innings until the Salukis recorded two runs in the fourth. The Raiders tried to answer but two more runs from Southern Illinois in the top of the seventh ultimately handed the Salukis the victory.

Katie Bushee and Holly Geranen were both strong for Colgate, going 3-for-8 and 3-for-7, respectively, on the day. Bushee finished with a run and an RBI, while Geranen accounted for an RBI. Rookies La Terra and Pami White chipped in two hits each.

Brigit Ieuter pitched four innings in game one allowing five hits and two earned runs. Kyle Griswold came in for relief, giving up two hits and two runs in three innings of work. The two combined for six strikeouts.

Three Raider pitchers took the circle in the nightcap with Gillian Murray going 1.2 innings, Megan Carnase 3.2 and Griswold 2.1. Murray started the game and allowed four hits and three runs, before Carnase and Griswold combined to allow six hits and three runs.
