Colgate Battles Stetson in Pitchers Duel

Raiders Drop Second Straight Eight-Inning Game; Ieuter Pitches Seven Scoreless Innings

DELAND, Fla. – Colgate Softball saw Stetson score the game-winning run in the eighth inning to steal a 1-0 victory here Sunday afternoon in the final Raider game of the Stetson Invitational.

Brigit Ieuter was dominant in the circle for Colgate, pitching seven scoreless innings and allowing seven hits. The senior issued five walks while fanning three batters in her 128 pitches thrown.

Both teams had plenty of chances to reel in the go-ahead run before extra frames, but eight runners left on base for the Raiders and 13 from Stetson forced one more inning.

Ieuter wasn't the only hurler to have a good outing as the Hatters' Chelsea Hostetler gave up just two hits in eight shutout innings.

Marisa Dowling and Tara Grennan recorded both of Colgate's hits on the day.

Grennan, Katie Bushee and Gillian Murray each were credited with a stolen base, while five Raiders earned walks in the game.

Kyle Griswold dipped to 0-3 on the year after giving up the eventual winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Colgate has a week off before it heads west for its spring break trip, which features tournaments at UC Davis and Santa Clara. The Raiders face off with Stony Brook on March 11 in their first game of the UC Davis Tournament. First pitch is slated for 11:15 a.m. Pacific time.

Straight From The Source
• Colgate head coach Melissa Finley: (on her thoughts from the game) "While we didn't get the results that we wanted this weekend we saw some great competition and learned a lot. We had a lot of opportunities to test the team in different situations and while we lost some nail-biters, I know it will only make us better in the long run.

"Brigit (Ieuter) pitched a masterful game today and it was too bad that we couldn't support her offensively.

"Overall, I'm just looking forward to our next opportunity to compete."
