Colgate Falls 73-71 to Campbell in Overtime Heartbreaker

Regisford Tallies Double-Double, Drains Game-Tying Three-Pointer

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Colgate men's basketball sophomore Malcolm Regisford drained a game-tying three-pointer with two seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but Campbell was able to power past the Raiders in the extra frame to earn a 73-71 victory Saturday in the Holy City Hoops Classic.

The back-and-forth battle saw 19 lead changes and 14 tie scores. Regisford scored a career-high 21 points to go along with a career-best 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. First-year Will Rayman added 15 points and six boards.

The Raiders got out to an early 9-2 lead thanks to five points from Regisford and four from senior Nathan Harries. Colgate forced two Campbell turnovers and held the Camels to just one field goal in the first six minutes as the clock stood at 14:00.

Campbell responded with a 15-6 run over the next 5:17 as the Camels took over the lead at 17-15 with 10:32 remaining in the opening term. A layup from sophomore Dana Batt and three points from junior Tom Rivard had Colgate in front 20-17, but the teams traded baskets and the score was tied four times over the next six minutes. The Raiders held a slim 29-28 lead following a jumper from Rayman before Campbell's Chris Clemons' drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Camels a 31-29 advantage heading into halftime.

The Camels scored five of the first six second-half points, but the Raiders responded with a 9-1 run over the next four minutes to reclaim the lead at 39-37 with 13:57 on the clock. Campbell spent the next 5:25 on a 14-8 streak to pull ahead 51-47.

Colgate tied the score at 53 three minutes later following three points from both Regisford and Rayman as the clock wound down to 5:39. An exchange of baskets had Campbell in front 61-59 at 1:43, but Rayman converted two free throws before Regisford tossed in a layup to give the Raiders a 63-61 lead with 50 seconds left in regulation.

Campbell drained a three-pointer and followed it with a layup to put Colgate in a 66-63 hole with nine seconds on the clock. A pass from Amiel found Regisford in the corner as the sophomore drained his first career three-pointer to send the game to overtime tied at 66-66.

Senior Andrew Bargmann capitalized on a pair of free throws to open the extra frame, but Campbell followed with a free throw and three-pointer from Cory Gensler to pull ahead 70-68 with 2:20 on the clock.

O'Brien drained a trey to put Colgate ahead by one at 71-70 with 50 seconds on the clock. It would be the final Raider points of the game, however, as Campbell added three points from the charity stripe and held Colgate scoreless the rest of the way en route to the 73-71 overtime win.

  • "It's a disappointing outcome and I feel for the guys. They stepped up and were able to make some plays to put them into the position to win the game. There are some small things that are stopping us from getting ourselves the end result. We have to regroup and get ready to come back here tomorrow against USC Upstate."
