PITTSBURGH – The Colgate men's basketball team faced an 11-point halftime deficit and clawed back within three in the second half, but Duquesne pulled away for a 70-57 win Thursday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
First-year
Will Rayman finished Colgate's final non-league game of the season with a team-best 17 points, while junior
Jordan Swopshire followed with 12. Sophomore
Malcolm Regisford recorded his second double-double of the season thanks to 11 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.
The Dukes held an early 9-6 lead five minutes into the game, but Swopshire answered with five-straight points to give the Raiders their first advantage of the contest at 11-9 with 11:43 on the clock.
The game was tied at 18 following five points from sophomore
Dana Batt at the 7:21 mark. The Dukes then embarked on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to pull ahead 29-18 with 4:40 left in the opening half. A Regisford layup stopped the streak, but four points from Rayman would be all Colgate could muster for the remainder of the term as the Dukes took a 35-24 lead into the locker room.
Five points from Rayman and four from Regisford allowed Colgate to string together a 9-0 run to open the second half. The Raider streak forced a Duquesne timeout as the Dukes found their lead trimmed down to 35-33 three minutes into the term.
Duquesne responded with a 6-2 run over the next two minutes to go up 41-35. The Dukes held onto a six-point lead four minutes later at 48-42 before a Rayman trey pulled Colgate within three at 10:19. The Dukes rattled off the next seven points to put Colgate in a 55-45 hole with under eight minutes to play.
The Raiders were within eight on two occasions in the next three minutes, but it would be as close as Colgate could get the rest of the way as Duquesne walked away with the 70-57 win.
