Raiders Drop 3-0 Battle to First-Place American

Stansbury, Hutchison and Stebbins lead Colgate with Eight Kills Apiece

HAMILTON – The Colgate volleyball team wasn't able to get much going against undefeated American as the Raiders fell 3-0 (25-19-, 25-15, 25-19) Friday night at Cotterell Court.

The opening set began at a 6-6 tie before the Raiders used a 5-2 run to take an 11-8 lead due in part to a pair of kills from both Kathleen Harris and Katie Stansbury. The Eagles answered with a 6-2 streak to claim a 14-12 lead and force a Colgate timeout. The Raiders were within three at 19-16, but American rattled off six of the final nine points of the set to claim a 25-19 victory.

The Eagles got out to a quick 8-1 lead in the second set, but a pair of Raider blocks, a kill from Katie Stebbins and two American errors helped Colgate battle back within two at 9-7. American then used an 8-3 streak to stretch its lead. The Raiders were never able to recover as the Eagles grabbed a 25-15 set-two victory to take a 2-0 match advantage.

A pair of kills from Jaelah Hutchison and a spike from Stansbury had the score knotted at 3-3 early on in the third set. American was able to jump ahead 13-6, but a Harris kill sparked a 12-4 Colgate run that gave the Raiders an 18-17 lead. Stebbins, Stansbury and Hutchison all contributed two kills apiece in Colgate's comeback run. The Eagles answered with six straight points en route to a 25-19 set-three win and 3-0 match victory.
