Raiders Hold On to Beat Bucknell in Four Sets

Taylor Flaherty Records Team-High 13 Kills to Lead Way

HAMILTON – The Raiders picked up their second win over Bucknell this season, defeating the Bison 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21).

Colgate held off a tenacious Bison team to take the first set, 25-20. The Raiders jumped out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to two blocks by freshman Jessica Lathan. The Bison fought their way back into the frame, tying the set at 11 apiece. Colgate used a 9-5 run to put some distance between the teams, thanks in part to three kills by senior Kathleen Harris and four Bucknell attack errors. The Raiders were able to close out the set by capitalizing on four Bison errors. Harris led the way with four kills in the frame.

The Raiders were down big in the second set, but fought their way out of a six-point hole to win the second set, 25-23. The Bison grabbed hold of the early 10-4 lead by taking advantage of four Raider errors. But then, Colgate went on an 8-1 of its own to tie the set at 16. Madison McAndrews led the run with a five-point service stretch. The teams continued to trade points, keeping the other within one until Jaelah Hutchison and Amanda Smith came up with a huge block at the net to give the Raiders the 24-22 lead. A Bison kill brought the score to 24-23, but Harris recorded a big kill to give the Raiders the 25-23 win.

Colgate held a 12-5 advantage in the third frame, but the Bison swung the momentum back in their favor, taking the set 25-22. Harris had a five-point service stretch during the early run and Hutchison had a four-point stretch of her own to give the Raiders the big lead. The Bison went on a 6-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the frame at 13-12. Bucknell continued to push its lead, holding a 16-13 advantage over Colgate. The Raiders held the Bison to within three points for the majority of the latter half of the frame, but could not get closer than that, falling 25-22. Taylor Flaherty had four kills in the to pace the Raiders' offense.

After a tough battle throughout the entire fourth frame, Colgate came out ahead 25-21. The Raiders once again got out ahead early in the fourth set, but similar to the third, Bucknell fought its way back in. After tying the set at 10, the Bison went on an 8-5 run to take the 18-15 advantage over Colgate. Just when it looked the Raiders were out of it, the team found its way back, led by a six-point Hutchison service stretch.  This set was a fight  until the end, but thanks to a big block by Lauren Sanderson and Noel Kennebeck and a solo block by Flaherty, the Raiders were able to take the match and hold onto second place in the conference.

Colgate is back in action at Cotterell Court on Friday as the team takes on American an 7 p.m. The Raiders dropped the previous meeting this season, 3-0. Live stats and video will be available for the match.
